Washing & ConditioningUpdated 5 hours ago
- Post-Installation Waiting: Wait at least 48 hours (up to 72 hours for tape-ins) after a new extension install before shampooing. This gives adhesive bonds time to fully cure and set securely
- Washing Frequency: Limit hair washing to 2–3 times per week to avoid over-stripping moisture. Over-washing can dry out extension hair since it doesn’t receive natural scalp oils. On non-wash days, you can rinse and condition or use dry shampoo sparingly if needed (keeping products off the bonds).
- Extension-Safe Products: Use only sulfate-free, paraben-free shampoos and conditioners formulated for extensions. Invest in salon-quality or extension-brand products – drugstore formulas or those with harsh detergents can cause dryness or buildup that shortens extension lifespans. Avoid extremely “moisturizing” or protein-heavy shampoos that can leave residue; a gentle clarifying shampoo can be used occasionally to remove product buildup (especially for clients with hard water). Always focus shampoo on the scalp and extension attachments rather than the ends.
- Gentle Washing Technique: When washing, do not flip your head upside down or scrub roughly. Wash in the shower with your head upright Use your fingertips to gently massage the scalp and extension wefts/bonds in a downward, vertical motion, avoiding any circular scrubbing over the attachment points. If you have multiple weft rows, wash and rinse section by section (lift each row and cleanse the scalp beneath) to ensure the scalp between extensions gets cleaned. Rinse very thoroughly, tilting your head back and letting water flow from roots to ends – this helps prevent tangling and ensures no shampoo/conditioner is left trapped near bonds.
- Conditioning: After shampooing, apply conditioner or a hydrating mask only from mid-lengths to the ends of the hair – never on the roots or bonds. Keeping heavy conditioners, oils, or masks away from the extension attachment points prevents slippage (remember: oils can break down tape and keratin bonds). For extra moisture, incorporate a deep conditioning treatment periodically (e.g. once every 1–2 weeks, or every few washes) to keep extension hair soft and nourished. Just take care that any mask or treatment is applied only on the lengths and ends.
- Water Quality: Advise clients that hard water or well water can lead to mineral buildup on extensions (causing dryness or color changes). If applicable, suggest using a showerhead filter or using a chelating treatment occasionally to remove mineral deposits. (For example, some extension care lines offer sprays like Great Lengths Anti-Tap Water to neutralize minerals and residue after washing. This helps extensions maintain their shine and color.
